Saturday night’s winners were familiar to those who have been following awards season, as actors from “The Bear,” “Oppenheimer” and “Beef” took home statuettes as expected. The Kansas Highway Patrol must stop using a tactic known as the “Kansas Two-Step” to detain out-of-state drivers long enough to find a reason to search their vehicles for illegal drugs, a federal judge has ruled. It follows Vratil's ruling in July that determined that the tactic violated drivers' constitutional rights against unreasonable searches. The judge concluded that the patrol targeted drivers traveling along Interstate 70 to or from states that have legalized either the medical or recreational use of marijuana. “The Kansas Highway Patrol is not above the law,” Sharon Brett, legal director for the ACLU of Kansas, said in a statement Tuesday. Questions about the patrol’s tactics became more visible after Colorado legalized recreational marijuana almost a decade ago.

Japan said it plans to release 1 million metric tons of treated radioactive water into the Pacific. Nuclear experts said the discharge is safe but one said he'd avoid eating fish near Fukushima. The water is from its Fukushima nuclear power plant that, in 2011, underwent a meltdown and is considered one of the biggest nuclear tragedies in history. There are a number of predictable needle drops during “Tiny Beautiful Things,” but not the most obvious one, from Imagine Dragons: “Oh, the misery / Everybody wants to be my enemy.” If you’re not humming that before episode 8, it is only because you don’t know the song. Adapted from a book by Cheryl Strayed (“Wild”) that was based on her work as an online advice columnist, the series stars Kathryn Hahn , who is watchable in anything, even this. But somewhere en route from the “Dear Sugar” phenomenon to a collection of essays to a stage play and then a TV series, someone lost the plot. That someone, evidently, was creator and showrunner Liz Tigelaar , who has reduced the advice-columnist hook to a virtual afterthought and produced a wearying storyline that never quite arcs. It does, however, fit the woman-centric agenda of the Reese Witherspoon-empowered Hello Sunshine company (“Big Little Lies,” “ Daisy Jones & The Six”), Ms. Witherspoon’s co-executive producers including Laura Dern , Ms. Strayed and Ms. Hahn.

Bakke said the latest report from the hospital finding Alissa incompetent also said he has a “reasonable likelihood” of reaching competency, an outlook also expressed in previous reports. Concerns about Alissa’s mental health were raised by his defense immediately after the March 2021 shooting. Competency is a different legal issue than a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, which involves whether someone’s mental health prevented them from understanding right from wrong when a crime was committed. They said Alissa passed a background check to legally buy a Ruger AR-556 pistol six days before the shooting.

Companies Nuscale Power Corp FollowWASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. nuclear power regulator has certified the design for the NuScale Power Corp's (SMR.N) small modular reactor, the first such approval in the country for the next generation technology. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approval, published in the Federal Register late on Thursday, clears a hurdle for NuScale. The company plans to build a demonstration small modular reactor (SMR) power plant at the Idaho National Laboratory. The U.S. Department of Energy has provided more than $600 million since 2014 to support the design, licensing and siting of NuScale's power plant and other small modular reactors. "SMRs are no longer an abstract concept," said Kathryn Huff, assistant secretary for nuclear energy at the Energy Department.

Hanesbrands Inc. said Thursday that Chief Financial Officer Michael Dastugue has resigned, effective Feb. 28, due to family reasons. The apparel company named Scott Lewis, its chief accounting officer and controller, as the interim finance chief until a successor is appointed. The company has initiated a search for a permanent CFO. Mr. Dastugue will continue to serve in a financial consultancy position through the second quarter, the company said.
